2007 - Year in Review
2007 was a tremendously successful year for all aspects of the tumbling program. Our Interclub athlete's competed at the 2nd Ontario Cup hosted by the club in January and then again in June at the Scarborough Gym Elites Annual Invtational. Many awards were won and many great first time ever back handsprings were competed!
Our Provincial program, which consisted of 16 athletes had 14 qualify themselves to Provincial Championships. We came home with multiple medals and podium (top 6) finishes. Two of our boys went on to compete for Team Ontario at the Eastern Canadian Championships hosted at Seneca College and turned in top 6 finishes! Way to go Provincial Team!
The National program continued it's success through last season. 12 athlete's attended the Canadian National Championships in Regina, Saskatchewan in late May. Emily Smith, Markus Laczko and Justin Wong returned home National Champions! While Lauren Robertson, Carolynne Wong, Sydney Brown, Alison Zareski, Courtney Bowman, David Findlay and Nick Kurtz turned in top 10 performances.
In August, many of our athletes competed in the Canada Cup held in Hamilton. Alison Zareski and Justin Wong ran away with the National Youth titles while Sydney Brown and Jaclyn Sicard were able to grab their first national podiums, both finishing 2nd in their respective categories.
We also had alot of success on the international seen this season. It started in April when Emily Smith placed 3rd at the Quebec City World Cup. She followed it up with another Bronze medal at the Polish World Cup in August while competing passes that earned her the Canadian Difficulty Record for women's tumbling. Also in August, Teja Durante, Jordan Sugrim and Justin Wong competed for Team Canada Juniors in a dual meet vs. Great Britain. All three athletes competed phenomenally and left great impressions on the international judges.
From there we travelled to Quebec City once again for the World Championships and World Age Group Championships in early November. Emily Smith was once again the "Rock" for Team Canada and helped them place 4th as a team! She was 13th indivdually. Jordan Sugrim was at her best in the Womens 15-16 category. She competed high level passes with ease and earned hersekf the silver medal. Meghan Hefford placed 8th in the same category with 2 brand new passes and a new personal best score! Markus Laczko competed in the men's 17-18 category and finish in 10th place. Then Jaclyn Sicard capped off a fantastic week for the B.G.'s by placing 5th in the Women's 11-12 category. It was Meghan, Markus and Jaclyn's first international competition!
With 2007 coming to close with a big bang, we know that all athletes and coaches will be working tremendously hard to ensure that 2008 is just as good, if not better!
